Bionic Woman - Kent Ninomiya

Kent Ninomiya

I officially give up on Bionic Woman. Like many of my generation, I had high hopes for this 70's rehash. It's produced by the same people who did an admirable job on Battlestar Galactica, so naturally I expected the same effort. Instead it appears they didn't make any effort at all. The actress portraying Jamie Summers, while attractive, does a poor job convincing us that she has any motivation. The scripts are weak and go nowhere. The point of the show is that this woman is bionic, but they don't showcase her abilities at all. I have no idea why she's a spy now and they spend way too much time pursuing a pointless romance. I imagine they're trying to attract female viewers but it's at the cost of the core male audience. They completely dropped the initial story line involving the other bionic woman and the father of her dead fiance. That held promise but they lost their way. I am now just waiting for the cancellation ax to fall and put a merciful end to this failed experiment. Still, I'm hoping they'll come to their senses and get back to basics before it's too late.

Kent Ninomiya - George Harrison

Kent Ninomiya. On this day in 2001, George Harrison, lead guitarist and spiritual anchor of the Beatles, died of cancer. He was 58. That was only 6 short years ago. In many ways it seems longer, in many ways shorter. I remember when John Lennon was shot in 1980. I was barely a teenager but I recall how I felt like it was yesterday. Both Lennon's and Harrison's passings came much too soon. In both instances I felt there was so much more they could share with us and that the human race suffered for it. Both deaths seem simultaneous in my mind making Lennon's death more recent and Harrison's more distant.

In honor of George Harrison's passing 6 years ago today... some quotes:

It's being here now that's important. There's no past and there's no future. Time is a very misleading thing. All there is ever, is the now. We can gain experience from the past, but we can't relive it; and we can hope for the future, but we don't know if there is one.
George Harrison (1943 - 2001)

If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there.George Harrison (1943 - 2001), "Any Road", Brainwashed, 2002

Life goes on within you and without you.
George Harrison (1943 - 2001), From the song "Within you without you" from Sgt PepperBest

Kent Ninomiya - BSG Razor

Kent Ninomiya

I am here to applaud the Battlestar Galactica Razor movie that premiered last night. It was excellently constructed and finely crafted. The creators should be complimented for venturing outside the regular cast and introducing new characters who could bring the story together. The movie filled in a lot of holes in the timeline. The gaps were inevitable considering the flashback device the series depends on so often. The movie nicely sets up the third and final season premiering in March. Hopefully they will wrap up the series in an equally satisfying fashion. If I have one complaint, it's that the climactic fight scene was clumsy. The rescue mission wasn't realistic and the cyclons just stopped coming after them after a while. Anyway... I probably shouldn't be using critical words like "realistic" when talking about a sci fi series. It's all make believe to begin with. All in all... I am eager to see more which is exactly what the creators intended. Well done.

Kent Ninomiya football vs. BSG

Kent Ninomiya

Tonight, a classic battle. The football fan vs the science fiction geek. The battle takes place deep within the conflicted dude. There are many of us. A few hide in the closet pretending not to care that Battlestar Galactica premiers it's 2 hour movie tonight. All the while they're triple checking their TiVos making sure it records correctly. Once the epic Kansas vs Missouri battle ends tonight they will switch over and savour the long awaited BSG. Will it match the hype? Will the game? It's quite a night for the fan/geek.

Kent Ninomiya writers

Kent Ninomiya. Hollywood's writers strike could end up being a wonderful opportunity for TV news. All indications are that new production will be virtually non existent until well into next year. In a few weeks stockpiled unseen entertainment will begin to dry up. TV news, especially magazine shows, can continue to provide fresh new content to a diversion hungry audience. Many of them may stay with us long after the strike ends. So what will we do with this opportunity? Is there a chance we could raise the bar and help people care about legitimate issues, or will we take the easy path and drop the bar feeding viewers the low brow tabloid fare they expect from their establishment entertainment industry? Will we fill the void of the strike by trying to be Hollywood or will we show the public that news can be entertaining as well as important. What do you think? Kent Ninomiya

Kent Ninomiya heroes

Kent Ninomiya

Heroes has redeemed itself in my eyes tonight. It was a long torturous wait but as promised it's all coming together. Claire's Dad was indeed shot dead in the eye by Mohinder. He lay there on the ground dead as Elvis, but in a brilliant twist comes back to life moments later thanks to Claire's blood. Nice. I can't wait for next week. I hope that damn writer's strike doesn't mess this up too much for too long. Thanks to the Heroes official web site for the photo.

Kent Ninomiya Battlestar Galactica

Kent Ninomiya

All of Geekdom is a-buzz. A two hour all new Battlestar Galactica premiers next Saturday. It's actually a flashback but will set up the third and final season of the show. To whet the appetite of fans, the Sci Fi Channel has posted flashback "razors" on their website every week. It shows a young Adama in the first Cylon war. They're pretty good. The actor looks and sounds like you'd exect a young Adama would. BSG represents the evolution of a franchise. Most fans of today's show were fans of the original 70's series. That one was campy and unsophisticated, sort of like we all were when we were younger. The new series is mature and gritty, like most of us are now. It's been a successful formula. Take a concept that is dear to the hearts of your target demographic and remake it like they always wanted it to be. The people responsible for BSG are also behind Bionic Woman. They would be wise to follow their own example. BW is no BSG. It strayed from its original fan base.

Kent Ninomiya Heroes

Kent Ninomiya.
I have resisted the temptation to jump on the Heroes bashing bandwagon. I know the show is going through a sophomore slump, but I willing to be patient and see what develops. It's common for hit shows to go through this. Desperate Housewives, the Sopranos, etc. What I think people are forgetting is that Heroes, while being an entertaining distraction, is not original at all. The plot rips off X-men and dozens of other shows, books and comics. None of the powers the characters possess are original. The only thing novel about the show was that these people were tied together. Indeed, she show was about characters not powers just like Star Trek was more about friends with different personalities than outer space. I have faith that Heroes will work through their plot deficiencies and pay off in the end. Viewers would enjoy the show much more if they didn't expect too much. Remember, it's a recycled story. Enjoy it like a great used car and don't expect the new show smell.

Kent Ninomiya KJEO

Kent Ninomiya worked at the CBS affiliate in Fresno. At the time it had the call letters KJEO. This article on the subject attributed to Business Journal article by Don A. Wright.

I n a move resembling a fast-paced game of scrabble, two Fresno television stations have changed their call letters. KJEO 47 changed to KGPE, and on Monday, September 26, KMCF 32 took on KJEO

The change took place for two reasons. Channel 47 has been purchased by the Ackerley Group of Seattle Washington. In an act that leaves several local television industry officials scratching their heads, Ackerly changed KJEO to KGPE. According to a press release from Ackerley, the change will reflect the company's mission statement, "Grow. Protect. Enjoy."
Boost The Ratings.
The call letters will be just one of the many changes at 47, such as: automating the newsroom and controlling it remotely from Bakersfield with a robotic news system. Said Denni Curley, co-president and chief operating officer at the Ackerly group.

"We expect the personnel and technology we devote to KGPE will improve its local newscasts, which will increase ratings, which will enhance our ability to generate advertising revenue."

Channel 47 has had trouble maintaining competitive ratings for its evening newscast.

The second reason for change is Gary Cocola, president of Cocola Broadcasting Company. Cocola owns 20 television stations, 10 in the Fresno area, including channel 32. Cocola says he can't imagine Fresno television being without the call letters KJEO.

The KJEO call letters have been a fixture in Fresno television since 1953, when the late Jack E. O'Neill established one of the earliest local television stations, giving it his own initials, JEO. In 1963, Walt Disney learned of the station from his son-in-law who lived next door to the parents of one of the station's employees. Disney's Retlaw company (Walter spelled backwards) bought the station and later sold it to Fisher Broadcasting. Fisher sold the station to the Ackerly Group for a reported $60 million this past August.

Kent Ninomiya KIEM

Profiles of various television stations where Kent Ninomiya worked as described on wikipedia.
KIEM signed on the air as Eureka's first television station on October 25, 1953. Since KIEM-TV was the only station in the Eureka market at the time, it offered programs from more than one network. Initially KIEM was affiliated with CBS; however, the station also provided programs from NBC, ABC, and DuMont (the DuMont Network folded in 1956). After KVIQ signed on in 1958 and took the NBC affiliation, both stations offered some ABC programs on a part-time basis. Full-time ABC coverage was provided by Redding ABC affiliate KRCR-TV on area cable systems.
Another commercial station, 'KREQ-TV' (later KAEF) signed on the air in 1987 offering Fox programming to the North Coast area. When that station's affiliation changed to ABC, both KVIQ and KIEM ceased offering ABC programs on a part-time basis.
By the mid-1980s, KVIQ and KIEM had swapped affiliations, with KIEM picking up the NBC affiliation. Today, KIEM has the distinction of being the only commercial outlet in the Eureka market offering local news, a distinction reflected in the station's branding as "News Channel 3" rather than "NBC3." My Network TV station KEMY offers some newscasts from KTVU in San Francisco, but does not produce its own newscasts. KVIQ and KBVU will soon have a shared local newscast but it's unknown when that will happen.
KIEM is one of the last few NBC affiliates that does not have a morning newscast. In addition, KIEM signs off every weekend night.
In California, the Eureka television market and the Yuma-El Centro market are the only TV markets currently not available on either Dish Network or DirecTV.
Kent Ninomiya worked at KIEM in 1989-1990.

Kent Ninomiya WGGB

Profiles of various television stations where Kent Ninomiya worked around the country.
WGGB-TV is the ABC-affiliated television station for Western Massachusetts. Licensed to Springfield, the station broadcasts an analog signal on UHF channel 40 and a digital signal on UHF channel 55. WGGB's transmitter is located on Mount Tom in Holyoke along with WSHM-LP and WGBY-TV. WFXQ-CA, the newest television station in the market, has its transmitter located further down the ridge at the top of the old ski area. Owned by Gormally Broadcasting LLC (after nine years with the Sinclair Broadcast Group), WGGB has studios that are located on Liberty Street in Springfield. The station is known on-air as "ABC 40"
At one point, the station had offered The Tube, a 24-hour digital music channel, on its DT2 digital subchannel. However, it was dropped at the end of 2006.
